Kathy Sprau

  • Board member since 2022
  • Resident of La Porte, IN

Kathy Sprau was the founder and owner of a senior services business in Chicago for 18 years. She and her husband, Collin spent many years splitting their time between the north shore of Chicago and Crested Butte, CO. As their family of 5 children grew to include significant others and 9 grandchildren, a second home in Harbor Country made sense. Shortly after purchasing in the area, Kathy sold her business and they now make Harbor Country home full time.

Kathy has spent years volunteering and doing development and fundraising with many organizations, including Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council, Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte, CO, University of Chicago Cancer Research Auxiliary Board, P.T.A. and their church.

Although mostly retired, Kathy still has a role as industry advisor to a senior services digital startup in New York and enjoys gardening, biking and life in the country. She is looking forward to working on the board as The Acorn enters a new and exciting time.

He is the founder of Schubas Tavern and Lincoln Hall in Chicago and presented live concerts at those clubs every night for over 25 years.

Mitchell Sabshon

  • Resident of Chicago and Union Pier

Mitchell has been in love with live music performances of almost every genre since the late ‘60s. He and his wife, Joan Colmar, have been homeowners in New Buffalo Township since 2018 and soon discovered the Acorn Theater. They consider it the “Crown Jewel” of southwestern Michigan culture. Mitchell is Chief Executive Officer of Emperus Strategic Advisors, LLC, a consulting firm providing advisory services focused on real estate, financing, and investment fund structure and management. Prior to Emperus, he was Chief Executive Officer of Inland Real Estate Investment Corporation, a national sponsor of real estate investments.

Mr. Sabshon is a member of the board of trustees of Seritage Growth Properties (NYSE: SRG), Chair of its Nominating and Governance Committee, and a member of its Investment Committee. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Chicago’s Timeline Theatre Company, Chairman Emeritus of the Institute for Portfolio Alternatives, and a member of the New York State Bar.

Bernadette Rapaich

  • Board member since 2024
  • Resident of Saint Joseph, MI

Bernadette is a Michigan native who was raised on the lakeshore in Bridgman. She spent eight years in Kalamazoo for college and graduate school, earning her undergraduate degree in psychology and her master's in social work. During her education, she focused on trauma-informed therapy, holistic health, art therapy, and macro (policy) social work. Throughout her time in Kalamazoo, she worked at a non-profit called Gryphon Place, where her passion for community collaboration blossomed. She handled disaster management, resource/database management, and community outreach/collaboration for eight counties. Currently, she works as a medical social worker at the hospital in St. Joseph. Prior to that, she spent a few years working as an outpatient clinical therapist in private practice. She is a dedicated Acorn volunteer and also volunteers for the Red Cross as a disaster mental health clinician. If she’s not working or volunteering, she’s hiking in the woods or walking the beach with her dog Louie, spending time with friends & family, reading, writing, or practicing photography.

Her professional and personal experiences have taught her that fostering art in a community brings connection, beauty, and enriches the lives of the people who reside there. “Through expression, art fosters connection, aiding us in understanding ourselves and others. Understanding or awareness is the first step to change, as we emphasize in therapy.” This is why, in her therapeutic practice, she frequently incorporates art and music therapy. The same magic can be harnessed to grow and strengthen communities through art.

She specifically feels honored to serve The Acorn, not just because it brings art into the community, but because The Acorn itself is extraordinary. It is entirely unique, from the stars on the ceiling that originated as leftover wedding decorations to Bill, who delivers the most welcoming speeches, to Rasa, the most dedicated volunteer and music lover you'll ever meet. All the individual pieces that have come together to create the magic of The Acorn couldn't be replicated. When volunteering, she has the opportunity to engage with patrons, staff, and other volunteers, and everyone echoes the same sentiment:

There is something truly special about The Acorn. She is sure you all understand exactly what she means.

Since entering the workforce, Bernadette sought opportunities to work both hands-on and behind the scenes, guiding and creating large-scale changes. She would like to contribute to that mission as an Acorn board member. She brings knowledge and skills related to mental health, community connection/collaboration, and social policy. In some ways, she does not fit the typical mold of board member candidates; she sees this as an advantage and would love to bring diverse ideas and energy to assist The Acorn Board in the great task of serving as caretakers for this special little theater.

Brad Martin

  • Board member since 2022
  • Resident of Long Beach, IN

Brad and his wife Tracy were first introduced to The Acorn when her cousin Corky Siegel was performing there. Brad has always enjoyed live music and looked forward to summer weekends at their family home in Michiana where Brad, his wife, and friends would head to Three Oaks to catch a show at The Acorn. Brad and Tracy relocated from the Chicago suburbs to Long Beach Indiana in 2020 and are now able to enjoy The Acorn throughout the year.

Brad has been in the mortgage industry for over 28 years, starting as general counsel to a multi-state mortgage lender and then owning his own mortgage brokerage company for 15 years. Brad is now a Senior Mortgage Consultant at Wintrust Mortgage. Prior to entering the mortgage industry, Brad was a corporate real estate attorney at a Chicago law firm. While Brad no longer practices law, his background assures that his clients are well informed on the entire purchase or refinancing process while providing them with the most professional service and advice.

Other boards where Brad has dedicated his time and experience are the Jewish Council for Youth Services, Children’s Research Fund of Lurie Children’s Hospital and Giving Rocks Foundation. Brad earned his bachelor’s degree in political communications from The George Washington University and a Law degree from Loyola University of Chicago.

Paddy Lauber

  • Building & Grounds Committee Co-Chair
  • Board member since 2022
  • Resident of New Buffalo, MI

Paddy has been coming up to Harbor Country long before it was called Harbor Country. She and her husband purchased a typical Michigan cottage when their two boys were young as it provided a great way to escape City life and have a dirt road in front of their cottage. As the boys grew up and more space was needed, they designed and built a new home and now call Michigan home.

While Paddy still maintains a hand in the real estate business she started 45 years ago and often goes back to Chicago to check on things she really enjoys everything Michigan has to offer. She and her husband have been patrons of the arts attending The Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Lyric every year and have grown to love The Acorn and what it offers southwest Michigan.

While she is a new member of the Board, she is looking forward to helping with the new building purchase to make it an even better venue for productions and performers.

Laura Madsen Jolly

  • Past Chair
  • Chair, Events Committee
  • Development Committee Co-Chair
  • Board member since 2019
  • Resident of New Buffalo, MI

Like many of us, Laura and her husband Fred fell in love with The Acorn when they attended their very first show back in 2017. Inspired by this wonderfully funky theater and recognizing the importance of it in our community, they have both been active volunteers and supporters ever since, and are fully engaged and committed to securing the future of this remarkable place at the heart of Harbor Country.

Laura's passion to positively impact the theater began with volunteering her hospitality chops and notably co-chairing our primary VIP and annual benefit fundraisers in 2018 and 2019. She joined the board in late 2019 and stepped into the role of Chair of the Development Chair where she lead grant-writing and fundraising for the next few years. She helped keep the theater afloat during the global pandemic and served two 9-month stints as Interim Executive Director as the ACPA Board searched for a new leader. She served as Board Chair in 2022 and 2023 and now leads the Nominating & Governance Committee.

Before life at The Acorn, Laura enjoyed a 25-year career in information technology, holding various positions in sales and sales leadership and living and traveling across the U.S. It is in her last position as a global business development manager with Hewlett-Packard that she met Fred in downtown Chicago, and upon retiring from Hewlett-Packard in 2012, they traveled for a couple of years in a motorhome [yes, they're still married!] visiting all 59 of our country's national parks before settling down in New Buffalo at the end of 2016.

Passionate about the Harbor Country community, Laura keeps very busy here. She serves on the Rotary Club of Harbor Country board, volunteers with the Chikaming Open Lands Mighty Acorns program, and serves as Treasurer of her homeowners' association.

Laura is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin where she earned a BA in Journalism and a Master's Degree in Business Administration.
