"Louder Than Love" - The Greatest Untold Story in Rock & Roll History

Friday, Feb. 11 | 8:00pm ET (7:00pm CT)

DiscussionFilm

While the West Coast was groovin’ to the sounds of the “Summer of Love” in 1967, Detroit was pumping out a hard-driving, gritty, raw sound that was “Louder Than Love” and The Grande Ballroom stood as the epicenter of it all. Serving as the starting point for bands such as MC5, Iggy & The Stooges, Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes, The Grande Ballroom not only influenced local Detroit musicians but inspired bands from all over the U.S. and Great Britain. Legendary acts like Led Zeppelin, Cream, B.B. King, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, and The Who graced The Grande main stage on a regular basis.

Louder Than Love is the story of the hallowed halls that started it all, the greatest untold story in Rock & Roll history as revealed by the musicians, artists, and people that lived it and helped create The Grande’s legend.

Talkback following the film screening with director Tony D'Annunzio, moderated by Peter Carey.

Christmas at The Acorn

Thursday, Dec. 23 | 8:00pm ET (7:00pm CT)

FamilyHoliday

Mark down Thursday, December 23 as the real start of your 2021 Christmas! Harbor Country Opera out-does itself again in its seventeenth annual Christmas at the Acorn. The Thursday before Christmas, founder Robert Swan will bring together five of the finest singers you could wish to hear, including Acorn favorites tenor John Concepcion and soprano Kimberly Jones.

Swan says-"Each Christmas we try to find fresh new songs people haven't heard before or favorites that we have somehow missed." You would have to look far to find the eclectic concoction of humor and beauty to be found Thursday evening the 23nd at the Acorn. From tenor John Concepcion's haunting rendition of Balulalow, accompanied on the harp by Ramona Kim, to a couple of rarely heard medieval Christmas motets, there is truly something for everyone. Founder Robert Swan will also sing The Christmas Song- Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire!

As usual, there are plenty of opportunities for the audience to join in song, with selections like Silent Night and White Christmas!

Bring the whole family!

Enjoy Heavenly Christmas Music!

Music is good for the soul...and so is Laughter. Great Christmas music, beautifully sung...generous helpings of laughter, with perhaps a touch of mulled wine or hot buttered rum, and a special sense of community that never fails to brighten the season—this is what HCO’s Christmas is all about.

Judy Collins

Sunday, Nov. 14 | 8:00pm ET (7:00pm CT)

FolkSinger-Songwriter

Judy Collins has long inspired audiences. As an award-winning singer-songwriter, she is esteemed both for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards as well as her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical, A Little Night Music, won "Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits as well as gold and platinum selling albums. Recently, contemporary and classic artists including Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins.

Judy’s sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs and a firm commitment to social activism ring throughout her music. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. Judy’s most recent project as a singer-songwriter is the 2019 album Winter Stories, which includes critically-acclaimed Norwegian folk artist Jonas Fjeld, and masterful bluegrass band Chatham County Line. Winter Stories, is a collection of classics, new tunes, and a few surprises, featuring spirited lead vocal turns, breathtaking duets, and Judy’s stunning vocal harmonies.

Judy is as creatively vigorous as ever. She continues to write, tour worldwide, and nurture fresh talent. She is a modern-day Renaissance woman - an accomplished painter, filmmaker, record label head, musical mentor, and an in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention. She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart.
